What Humidity Actually Does to Kids' Hair (And How to Stop It)

Humidity doesn't just make it feel hotter outside. It actively works against every hair style you've built. Understanding why is the first step to actually dealing with it.

What's Happening at the Hair Level

Hair is made up of a protein called keratin, and it has a naturally porous surface. When the air is humid, hair absorbs moisture from the air — but it doesn't absorb it evenly. Different parts of the hair shaft swell at different rates, which breaks the alignment of the cuticle and causes the familiar puffed-up, frizzy result.

For kids with curly or coily hair, this process amplifies curl and volume. For kids with fine or straight hair, it creates unpredictable frizz and body. Neither is what most parents are going for.

Why Some Products Make It Worse

Products with heavy oils or waxes can weigh hair down but don't seal out moisture — they just delay the inevitable. And products with alcohol dry hair out even more, which makes it even more porous and even more prone to absorbing humidity.

The goal is to use products that seal the hair cuticle without drying it out.

What Actually Works

Our Taming Cream works by smoothing the cuticle and locking in moisture from within. When the hair shaft is already hydrated, it has less need to absorb moisture from the air — which is what causes the swell and frizz in the first place.

Apply it to damp hair and let it dry naturally, or apply a small amount to dry hair to smooth frizz that's already started. It's lightweight, won't leave residue, and is safe for kids' scalps.

One More Thing That Helps

Styles that keep hair contained — braids, buns, ponytails — are naturally more humidity-resistant than loose styles. They have less surface area exposed to the air. On very humid days, start with Taming Cream on damp hair and then pull it back. That combination holds up much longer than either approach alone.
