Spring is here — and along with the blooming flowers and extra playground time comes a whole new set of hair challenges for kids. Humidity kicks in, outdoor play increases, and the dry winter air gives way to something entirely different. Your child's hair care routine may need a little springtime refresh.
Here's what changes with the season and exactly how to keep up.
Why Spring Affects Kids Hair
Hair responds to its environment. In winter, cold and dry air strips moisture and causes static. In spring, the opposite happens: rising humidity levels cause the hair shaft to absorb moisture from the air unevenly, which leads to puffing, frizzing, and flyaways that seem impossible to tame.
Add in more outdoor time, sweat, and wind, and spring can be one of the trickier seasons for kids hair management — but with a few simple adjustments, it's totally manageable.
Swap Heavy Products for Lightweight Ones
If you've been using thicker creams or butters through winter to combat dryness, spring is a good time to switch to something lighter. Heavy products in humid weather can weigh hair down and feel greasy.
Our Taming Cream for Frizz, Flyaways and Bed Head strikes the perfect balance — enough moisture to smooth and control without heaviness. Apply to damp hair in the morning for a fresh, frizz-free look that holds through the day.
Keep Up the Moisture (But Don't Overdo It)
Spring air can still be drying, especially on windy days. Don't cut out moisture products completely — just lighten up. The goal is to keep the hair shaft hydrated enough that it doesn't need to reach for humidity from the air.
A light leave-in cream or daily spritz of our Taming & Detangling Spray keeps hair refreshed between washes and helps manage that mid-day puff.
Wash More Frequently If Needed
More outdoor play means more sweat, pollen, and dirt in the hair. If your child is active outdoors every day, you may need to wash their hair a bit more frequently than you did in winter. But keep it gentle — no need to strip the scalp. Two to three times a week is usually still plenty for most kids.
Protective Styles Are Your Friend
Spring sports, playground time, and breezy days are the perfect recipe for tangles. Braids, buns, and low ponytails protect kids hair from the wind and keep it out of their face during active play. Looser styles are better for delicate hair — tight styles can cause breakage at the hairline over time.
Apply a little Taming Cream or Taming Gel before styling for hold that keeps flyaways in check all day.
Watch for Allergy Season
Spring allergies can affect the scalp too. If your child has a sensitive scalp and you notice more itching or flaking during allergy season, it may be worth checking their hair products for common irritants like fragrance and sulfates. Our products are formulated without harsh ingredients — gentle enough for the most sensitive scalps.
