How to Detangle Curly Kids' Hair Without the Tears

How to Detangle Curly Kids' Hair Without the Tears

If detangling has turned into the part of the day everyone dreads, the product isn't usually the whole problem, the process is. A few changes to how and when you detangle make curly hair genuinely easier to work through, tears included.

Detangle wet, not dry

Dry curly hair is more likely to snag and break during detangling. Wet hair, especially with a little slip added, separates more easily. Use our Precision Fine Mister to dampen hair evenly before you start, it sprays a continuous fine mist from any angle, including upside down, so you can dampen hair without drenching it or fighting a kid who won't sit still.

Start at the ends

Working from the roots down pushes every knot lower down the strand, tightening tangles as you go. Start at the ends instead, and work upward in small sections. It takes a little longer per section but takes less time overall, and it hurts a lot less.

Use a brush built for it

Our Cat-Shaped Detangling Brush has soft, rounded bristles on a flexible pad that adapts to your kid's head instead of forcing a straight path through it. That flexibility helps reduce breakage compared to a stiff-bristled brush, and the cat-shaped handle is sized for little hands, so kids who want to try it themselves actually can.

Add slip with a leave-in

A leave-in cream adds slip that makes the brush glide instead of catch. Our Curl Leave-in Cream, worked through damp hair before you brush, softens the hair enough that detangling takes noticeably less effort.

Keep sessions short

If a knot isn't coming out easily, stop, add more moisture, and come back to it rather than pulling through it. Curly and coily hair holds onto knots more than straight hair does, and forcing it rarely saves time in the long run.

What not to do

Avoid brushing hair while it's fully dry and product-free, and avoid yanking through a knot from the middle of the strand, both tend to cause more breakage than they solve. If a session isn't going well, it's fine to stop and finish later rather than pushing through a frustrated, squirming kid.

It gets easier

Detangling gets easier the more consistently you do it. Hair that's detangled regularly builds up fewer knots between sessions, which means shorter, calmer sessions over time.
