How Often Should You Wash Kids' Hair in Summer?

The impulse to wash kids' hair every single day in summer makes complete sense — they're sweaty, chlorine-soaked, and rolling around outside. But daily washing can actually do more harm than good.

Here's what scalp health requires in summer, and how to fill the gaps on off days.

What Daily Washing Does to Kids' Hair

Every shampoo strips the scalp of natural oils (sebum) that protect and moisturize both the scalp and the hair shaft. In summer, when hair is already more prone to dryness from sun, chlorine, and saltwater, stripping it daily can cause:

  • Dry, brittle strands
  • An overactive scalp that overproduces oil to compensate
  • Increased frizz
  • Scalp irritation on sensitive skin

The General Rule

For most kids, washing hair 2–3 times per week is enough — even in summer. Kids who swim daily are the exception and may need to rinse (without shampoo) more often to remove chlorine, followed by conditioner to restore moisture.

The goal is removing chlorine and buildup without stripping the scalp's natural protective layer.

What to Do on Non-Wash Days

T is for Tame's Dry Shampoo absorbs excess oil at the roots and refreshes hair without water — no bath, no drying time. It's clean, kid-safe, and takes about 30 seconds to apply. A must-have for between-wash days.

For a mid-day refresh after outdoor play, a light mist of water with a small amount of conditioner worked into the ends can restore softness without a full wash.

How to Know When It's Actually Time to Wash

  • Hair looks visibly oily at the roots
  • Scalp itches or feels grimy
  • Product has built up and hair feels coated
  • Chlorine or saltwater smell is still present after rinsing

The Role of Conditioner in Summer

Whether or not you shampoo, conditioning matters in summer — especially for kids who swim. T is for Tame's Conditioner replenishes moisture stripped by chlorine, UV rays, and heat. On rinse-only days, apply conditioner, leave for 60 seconds, and rinse. It makes a noticeable difference over the course of the summer.
