little girl with curly hair "t is for tame"

Managing Your Babies' Curly Hair Just Got Easier. Pro Tip: moisture!

There is nothing cuter than a toddler with beautiful curls. While they may look super cute, curly hair can often bring its own set of issues, especially when the curly hair little one is born to a straight hair mama! Managing a baby or toddler with curly hair can seem overwhelming. Here are some tips and tricks to make managing those curls easier!

Dos

When dealing with curly hair you want to condition, condition, condition. Condition curly hair daily with a nutrient rich hair conditioner or hair product that contains conditioners. Use a wide tooth comb or your fingers to style and always comb when wet. If you are working on tangles start at the bottom and work your way up to the root, moving very slowly.

For those with 3C or 4C curls, protective styling is a must. It helps lock in moisture and prevents damage from over styling. A simple braid before bed or a silk pillowcase can do the trick.

Another good tip is:  Instead of using a towel to dry curly hair use a t-shirt. A t-shirt or even a microfiber towel will absorb extra water without frizz.

Don’ts

Shampoo strips hair of moisture and natural oils so you do not want to wash curly hair daily or even every other day.  Don't use traditional brushes meant for straight hair on those curly locks. Try combs, detangling brushes or brushes made for curls.

Detangling hints

Don’t detangle dry. If your curly haired cutie wakes up tangled and frizzy use water to hydrate, a moisturizing detangler and gently comb through with a wide tooth comb or a wet brush. The more moisture you can add to curly hair the easier and less frizzy your life will be.

Products

When looking for products for our curly haired littles you want to avoid products with harsh chemicals and drying alcohol. When finding the perfect product there is a little bit of trial and error. Our recommendations?

1. A leave in conditioner

2. Conditioning detangling spray

3. Conditioning hair styler

4. Wide tooth comb

5. Lots of patience!

Embrace the curl! And embrace your cutie!
