How to Detangle Kids' Hair Without Tears | T is for Tame

Detangling is the part of the hair routine most kids dread — and most parents dread too. But it doesn't have to be painful or take forever. The technique matters as much as the product, and when you have both working together, it changes the whole experience.

Step 1: Start with the right product

Before you touch a brush or comb, apply our Taming & Detangling Spray generously through the hair. It adds slip to each strand so the brush moves through instead of catching and pulling. On dry hair, let it sit for about 30 seconds before you start. On wet hair post-wash, apply straight away.

Step 2: Work in sections

Don't try to brush from root to tip through the whole head at once. Divide the hair into two or four sections depending on thickness. Secure the sections you're not working on with a clip or loose tie.

Step 3: Start at the ends, not the roots

This is the single biggest technique change that reduces pain and breakage. Start detangling from the bottom two to three inches of hair, and work your way up toward the root once the ends are free. Starting at the root pushes knots down into bigger knots and causes more breakage.

Step 4: Use the right brush

Our ventilated Detangling Brush is with a cute cat shaped handle is designed to flex through knots without pulling on the scalp. The soft, rounded bristles reduce drag and makes the brushing process gentler, which makes kids less resistant to it. It works on wet and dry and fine to medium hair.

Step 5: Finish with a style that holds

Once hair is fully detangled, apply a small amount of Taming Cream to seal the cuticle and keep the hair smooth. Style with our Baby or Toddler Hair Ties — no metal, no snapping, no pulling on the freshly detangled hair you just worked hard on.
