How to Wash a Toddler's Hair Without a Meltdown | T is for Tame

If bath time is mostly fine until the moment shampoo comes out, you're in very familiar territory. Toddlers and hair washing do not have a natural alliance. But with the right approach — and the right products — it gets a lot easier.

Why toddlers resist hair washing

Most of the resistance comes from two things: water and product getting near the eyes, and the discomfort of having their head tipped back or held in place. Toddlers have very little control over what's happening to them in those moments, which is stressful even when nothing hurts.

Addressing those two things directly makes the biggest difference.

What actually helps

Use a tear-free, gentle shampoo every time without exception. Our Taming Shampoo is formulated to be gentle on sensitive scalps and safe around the eyes — which removes one of the biggest sources of resistance. When they know it won't sting, the anticipatory crying starts to go away.

Keep the routine predictable. Same order, same steps, same language every time. Toddlers cooperate more with routines they can anticipate.

Give them a small amount of control. Let them hold a small cup, choose which direction they face, or hold the washcloth over their eyes. It reduces the powerless feeling that drives a lot of the meltdown.

After the wash

End with our Taming Conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends while the hair is still wet. It softens the hair before detangling, which makes the post-wash comb-through much smoother and less upsetting. Follow with our Taming & Detangling Spray on any sections that need extra slip.

The combination of a gentle shampoo, a nourishing conditioner, and a good detangler makes wash day shorter, which is the fastest way to make it easier for both of you.
