How to Wash a Baby's Hair Without Getting Water in Their Eyes

For some babies, the moment the water hits their head, bath time is over. The crying starts, everyone's stressed, and you've got shampoo still in the hair. If washing your baby's hair has become a battle, it might not be your baby's fault at all — it might be the technique.

Here's how to make hair washing gentle, efficient, and tear-free.

Why Babies Hate Getting Water in Their Eyes

It's not dramatic — water in the eyes genuinely stings, especially if there's shampoo involved. Even tear-free shampoos can cause mild discomfort if they get into the eyes in large amounts. And most babies haven't learned to close their eyes on command yet.

The goal isn't to eliminate all water contact — it's to control the water so it flows away from the face.

The Best Position for Washing Baby Hair

Position is everything. For young babies who can't sit up yet, the football hold works beautifully: hold baby face-up along your forearm, supporting their head over the sink or tub. This lets you control the water direction completely.

For older babies and toddlers in the tub, have them tilt their head back slightly while you pour water from a cup toward the back of the head — not over the forehead. Let gravity carry the water away from the face.

Use a Rinse Cup, Not a Direct Pour

The showerhead and faucet are harder to control. A small plastic rinse cup lets you pour slowly, precisely, and gently — directing water where you want it. Pour from the back of the head forward, holding your hand as a "dam" at the forehead to stop water from running down toward the eyes.

Keep Shampoo Minimal

Less shampoo means less risk. A small, pea-sized amount of gentle shampoo is enough for most babies' hair. Work it through the scalp with your fingertips and rinse completely. Using a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo also means any small amount that does get near the eyes will cause much less irritation.

Step-by-Step Tear-Free Hair Washing

  1. Position baby with head tilted slightly back.
  2. Wet hair using a rinse cup, pouring from back to front.
  3. Apply a pea-sized amount of gentle shampoo to the scalp.
  4. Massage gently with fingertips — never nails.
  5. Rinse using the cup, angling water toward the back.
  6. Keep one hand at the hairline as a barrier.
  7. Pat dry gently with a soft towel.

After the Wash

While hair is still damp, apply a small amount of our Taming Cream for Frizz, Flyaways and Bed Head to smooth and moisturize before it dries. This sets up easier styling in the morning and reduces tangles overnight.

For the full post-bath routine, our Taming Starter Kit has everything you need — the cream, the detangling spray, and the soft bristle brush.
