Why Kids' Hair Gets Tangled So Easily (And What You Can Do About It)

If it seems like your child's hair is constantly tangled no matter how often you detangle it, it's not just bad luck. Kids' hair really does tangle more than adult hair — and there are specific reasons why.

Why kids' hair tangles faster

The surface of each hair strand is made up of tiny overlapping cuticle cells. When the cuticle is raised or rough, strands catch on each other and form knots. Kids' hair cuticles are more prone to lifting because the hair is newer, more porous, and hasn't yet developed the natural oil coating that flattens the cuticle in adult hair.

Activity makes it worse. Kids move constantly, sleep on their hair, rub it against surfaces, and create friction that adults don't. That friction raises the cuticle and creates tangles faster than anything.

Hair type also plays a role

Curly and textured hair tangles more than straight hair because the curl pattern creates natural points where strands loop around each other. Fine hair tangles because individual strands interweave easily. Thick hair forms dense knots that are harder to work through. Different problems, same outcome.

How to prevent tangles, not just treat them

The Taming & Detangling Spray is designed for reactive use — when the tangles are already there. But you can also use it proactively, especially before sleep or after outdoor activity, to add slip to the hair shaft and reduce how much it catches on itself.

Braiding or putting hair into a loose style before sleep is one of the most effective ways to reduce morning tangles. Low-tension styles held with our Baby Hair Ties or Toddler Hair Ties protect the hair overnight without creasing or tangling further.

Our Taming Conditioner is also doing preventative work — a well-conditioned hair strand has a smoother cuticle, which means it catches and tangles less between wash days.
