Why Kids' Shampoo Should Be Sulfate-Free | T is for Tame

Most conventional kids' shampoos use sulfates as the primary cleansing ingredient. Sulfates are effective — they lather well and clean thoroughly — but they also strip the natural oils from the hair and scalp, which leaves hair dry, frizzy, and prone to breakage over time.

For kids with curly, textured, or fine hair, this is especially problematic, since those hair types depend on natural moisture to maintain their shape and softness.

What sulfates actually do

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are surfactants that create lather by attaching to both water and oil molecules. That's useful for removing buildup, but they don't discriminate between excess buildup and the sebum the scalp produces naturally to protect and condition the hair.

Strip that natural moisture repeatedly, and you get hair that looks dull, feels rough, tangles easily, and frizzes on contact with humidity.

What to look for instead

Sulfate-free shampoos use gentler surfactants that cleanse effectively without stripping. They still remove sweat, product buildup, and environmental residue — they just do it without disrupting the hair's moisture balance.

Our Taming Shampoo

Our Taming Shampoo is sulfate-free, free from harsh chemicals, and formulated specifically for kids' hair. It's gentle enough for daily use on sensitive scalps, and it cleanses without leaving hair dry, tangled, or dull.

Paired with our Taming Conditioner, it creates the right foundation for a wash day that actually ends with soft, manageable hair instead of a new set of problems to style around.
