Why Kids' Hair Ties Matter (And What to Look For) | T is for Tame

Hair ties are an afterthought for most parents. You grab whatever's in the junk drawer and get the ponytail done. But the tie you use every single morning adds up — and the wrong one causes real damage to kids' fine hair over time.

What the wrong hair tie does

Most conventional hair ties have a metal clasp where the elastic is joined together. That clasp catches on hair with every removal and causes breakage, especially on fine baby hair or toddler hair that's still growing in. Tight elastics also put too much tension on the hairline, which can cause thinning at the temples with repeated use.

What to look for instead

The ideal kids' hair tie is seamless — no metal clasp. It should have enough stretch to hold a style without gripping so tight that removal pulls hair. Silicone or soft fabric materials work best for fine hair.

Our new Baby Hair Ties and Toddler Hair Ties

We recently launched two new sets on Amazon — Baby Hair Ties and Toddler Hair Ties — both designed with these exact concerns in mind. No metal clasps, no snapping, no snagging. They're soft, reusable elastics that hold without pulling and come in a cute reusable bunny container so they're always easy to find.

The baby size is designed for the fine, often sparse hair in the 0–2 range. The toddler size gives a slightly stronger hold for thicker, longer hair that needs to stay put through a full day of activity.

They're also available together with the rest of the T is for Tame lineup through our Amazon store.
