If you're already using a good shampoo and your child's hair still feels dry, tangled, or dull after wash day, the conditioner is usually where things are going wrong — or where they're being skipped entirely.
Conditioner is not optional. Here's why, and how to pick the right one.
What conditioner actually does
Shampoo opens the hair cuticle to cleanse. Conditioner's job is to close it back down. When the cuticle lies flat, the hair reflects light (which is why conditioned hair looks shiny), resists moisture loss, and tangles less because strands slide past each other instead of catching.
Skipping conditioner after shampooing — or using one that's too light for the hair type — leaves the cuticle raised, which means more frizz, more tangles, and hair that feels rough to the touch even right after washing.
What to look for in a kids' conditioner
The formula matters more than the price. Look for conditioners that are free from sulfates and synthetic fragrances, which can cause scalp irritation in kids. The texture of the conditioner should match the hair type — lightweight for fine hair, richer and more moisturizing for curly or coily hair that needs more slip and hydration.
For toddlers and babies especially, avoid anything with dyes or heavy silicones, which can cause buildup on fine hair over time.
How to apply conditioner correctly on kids' hair
This part trips up a lot of parents. Conditioner should go on the mid-lengths and ends — not the scalp. Applying it at the roots adds unnecessary weight and can cause the scalp to feel greasy faster. For curly hair especially, focus on the ends, which are the driest part of the strand and the most prone to tangling.
Leave it on for one to two minutes before rinsing. For very thick or curly hair, a longer leave-in time helps the conditioner penetrate the shaft more effectively.
